You shouldn’t be afraid not to have an edge in the middle… it’s actually benefiting while riding as there is less friction without them and the hiking up happens with the skin and not the edges. I use a boat varnish to keep the wood core waterproof. We forgot to show it on the edit but it’s a key part to have your split last longer.
It’s good to put weight on your hills as much as possible when it get’s steeper…. way more grip that way.
It’s good to be ready to have a different approach than ski touring. Ski tourers will go zigzaging on the steeps as it is better for split boarders to go flat till the bottom of the run and then hike straight up with the board on the back… and potentially crampons and 2 ice axes.
Crampons and Ice axes scares a lot of people out… but even if sometimes they are not absolutely necessary, they reduce tremendously the effort while hiking and off course provide a way safer control in steeper terrain.
Always dry your skin after use
Be careful with your telescope poles… especially on expedition… they brake easily
Always bring a piece of metal wire with a small tool… that can avoid to turn back on an epic day or screw an entire expedition. Duck tapes works as well but not for board problems
It’s good to have a pair of light gloves to hike but especially to do the change overs…and then a normal pair for riding

Are there any other advantages of the splitboard to snowshoes besides that you don’t have to carry them back on the descents?
And one more question – I am sure that on powder there are no disadvantages of the splitboard but when it comes to hardpack having your board split in the middle to me looks like a bad idea. I haven’t tried splitboard and I am just guessing but I am thinking to split one old board…

Hi Ivo,
splitboard is way more efficient than snowshoes. It works fine on hardpack but if you don’t have powder around you won’t need a split.

salut xav ,je ride depuis 86 en backcountry et je te remerçie de l inspiration que tu me donnes par tes vidéos (ainsi qu’avec JJ) vous faites du super boulot !Juste une question:une fois la board coupée en 2 comment viellit l’ensemble au niveau des attaches aprés plusieurs saisons ? Salut Loic, le split avec lequel j’ai fait le plus de ride est sortie environ 30/40 jours sur la neige et son état est encore bon. Cependant je ne le ride plus car j’ai changé en début de saison dernière.

Je tourne en split depuis presque de 12 ans je pense, val de Bagnes et regions avoisinantes (et Cham la magnifique). Je n’en demors pas!
Je vois tres peu de splits en montagne (la surprise des gardiens/nes de cabanne a la vue de nos engins en temoigne!!). J’adore votre demarche, elle est une inspiration pour une communaute qui j’espere suite a vos films va un peu plus s’aventurer dans ce milieu magnifique. ET Grace a vous le materiel evolue. Merci aussi. C’est important.
Ces magnifiques images, ramenez nous en d’autres, ca nous sort de notre quotidien, meme si le we on en profite quand meme un peu!

Encore une ptite question matos :
tu utilises quoi comme boots quand ça devient un peu raide et dur et qu’il faut sortir les crampons?
parce que les boots de snowboard sont souvent trop large et trop souple pour être vraiment efficace avec les crampons…

Xavier utilise des boots Deeluxe qu’il a developpé, elles seront en shop l’hiver prochain, semelle vibram et il semble pouvoir utiliser les crampons sans soucis avec.
la saison est finie, à la saison prochaine.

I just order my first Voile kit, but have few questions regarding fisical condition.
1. In how good shape you have to be to climb one decent mtn. ? I’m on regular base, nothing extra (smoker though), do I need to prepare something extra for like normal mtns. ?
2. With split board in powder, how deep does the board sink in powder snow?

Hi Ani,
the fitter you’ll be the better and the more you’ll enjoy it. I guess you can start with easy mtn and go deeper if you feel in good shape. After few days out there you’ll be in shape and ight even want to quit smoking
The board doesn’t sink much more compare to regular board, the ride remains smooth and easy in powder. In hard snow it might change your board control a bit but powder is not an issue.

I have a question about snow shoes. I am riding in Alps and where I am from snow is alway frozen so I have to use crampons and ice axes. Problem is, that I use stiffer ice climbing shoes for the accent and change it with snowboarding shoe on the top of the mountain. I am wondering, what type of shoes do you use for the accent, or is there any shoe on the market that can be use for climbing with crampones and for good riding.

grâce à tes explications je viens de me fabriquer un splitboard, et j’arrive à la dernière étape qui me pose un problème..
Quel type de vernis/epoxy/résine as tu appliqué sur les champs de la planche coupé?
Je me suis renseigné dans divers magasins et shop bricolage ou snow, et tous me disent qu’un simple vernis craquera, et qu’un epoxy classique cassera avec les torsions..
J’ai trouvé un epoxy (gflex de west…) qui est une résine époxy flexible mais qui coûte un bras…
Quelle est ta solution, et comment cela à vieilli?
